Writing to time is a skill of its own. Practice mode recreates the exam.

Choose Academic or General Training, then a Full Writing test (60 minutes, Task 1 and Task 2), Task 1 only (20 minutes, 150+ words) or Task 2 only (40 minutes, 250+ words). You get a question you have not practised yet.

The timer counts down at the top and the word counter shows how far you are from the target. Interrupted? Pause the timer — your draft is saved on your phone as you type. Leave the test and resume it later from Practice, or discard it.

When time is up you can stop, or keep writing and see the extra time in red, just as you would notice it in the exam. Finished tests appear under Your past tests with your score.

Questions about Timed practice tests

Can I take a timed IELTS Writing practice test in the app?

Yes. Choose a 60-minute full test with Task 1 and Task 2, Task 1 only in 20 minutes or Task 2 only in 40 minutes, for Academic or General Training.

Does the app count my words while I write?

Yes. A live word counter shows how far you are from 150 or 250 words and tells you when you reach the target.

What happens if I am interrupted during a test?

Pause the timer. Your draft is saved on your phone as you type, so you can leave the test and resume it later from Practice.
